find out which brokerage is underwriting it, deposit a nice sum with them, express interest in the IPO in advance, and pray that they throw you a bone.

I wouldn't count on getting in on one of these unless you've got over a mil on the books with your broker. They are thought of as candy, free money, to brokerages, and they give them to their highest revenue clients. Every bank knows which ones are going to pop out of the gates, and they give those to the best clients. If you did manage to get in on one, it'd likely be bottom of the barrel - check out Vonage (VG).

Your best bet is to find an IPO you really like, then get in at the open. You'll miss the IPO free money, but if it's a quality stock you'll still be a winner in the first week of trading - look VMWare (VMW), IPO'd at $29, hit $51 after the open, but sitting at over $83 today. Even if you got in at $51 you'd be one happy camper.

So do your research, leverage your brokers info to find out what IPO's will be longer term winners, and then tell him to but after the open for you.

A couple years ago I was able to get in on one....International Coal ICO....turnaround guru Wilbur Ross was running the company, and I was/am high on the energy sector

Merril Lynch was happy to oblige my request(first clue something was up), but only 1,000 shares ( I asked for 5,000).

They made it clear that if I sold the shares within 6 months I had just cut my throat with them.

I got the shares at $10. It opened at $13...then it quickly dropped to $9 and I heard some negative things and knew it was time to cut and run. It went back to around $11 a month later and I sold. It's at $4.83 now.

Hey guys,

Let me first say that I've been following this forum for a few weeks now and like the stuff I see! Secondly, here's my question:

I may have a good chance of getting in on Virgin Mobile's upcoming IPO which is gonna be priced $13-$16 a share before opening to the rest of market. Does this strike you as an opportunity that I can't pass up? or a potential flop like ICO
